What To Do If You're Too High: 9 Ways To Stop Feeling High

9 Tips For Reducing Your High

We've all been there. You're having a great time, inducing in one THC and all of a sudden you realize you've gone too far and there isn't anything you can do about it.... or is there?

The age-old adage of “too much of a good thing is a bad thing” can definitely hold true when it comes to THC. While cannabis has very few adverse side effects, one thing that can be extremely unenjoyable is the feeling of getting too high or “greening out”. Whether you are a frequent or casual user, if you have ever found yourself a little too high you know exactly what we’re talking about. The anxiety and paranoia can come out of nowhere and produce the exact opposite effect as what you were hoping for.

How Long Does it Typically Take To Sober Up From THC?

The length of your high can vary greatly depending on your tolerance level, how much you consumed, and other environmental factors such as your physical makeup or the types of foods you had consumed that day.

Another contributing factor to the length of your high can be the method of consumption. For instance, an edible will typically last longer than inhalation.

Whether you consumed Delta 9 THC, Delta 8, or Delta 10, there is always a possibility you consume too much. In this article, we will go over all of the tried and true methods of bringing down your high.

What to do if you're too high. Here are 9 things to try if you smoked a little too much THC.

1. Stay Calm

This may be difficult at the moment, but the best thing you can do is stay calm. You will be ok! There have been zero reports throughout history of anyone overdosing or dying simply from smoking too much weed. With that in mind, keeping yourself calm and in a safe place is a must. It would be common for you to feel extremely anxious or paranoid if you consumed too much THC, so trying to stay calm will be the absolute best thing you can do. For this reason, we always recommend consuming THC in a place you feel safe and/or around people who provide you comfort.

Now that you have calmed yourself down, here are some other ways you can try to reduce or shorten the length of your high:

2. Drink Water

Cotton mouth is a real thing and will most certainly be present if you have over consumed THC. Keeping hydrated will help reduce your cottonmouth so you have one less thing to worry about. Plus, keeping hydrated is a good practice anyway.

Pro Tip: there is some evidence showing that lemon can help reduce the effects of THC. Try squeezing some lemon in your water to help bring down your high a little quicker.

3. Eat a Light Snack

While eating may not sober you up with THC like it might when you've been drinking alcohol, it is still a good idea to get some food in your stomach - if nothing else, it will be a nice distraction from the way you are feeling. However, one thing to keep in mind when eating and smoking, is that THC will bind better to fatty foods which can enhance your high. So, if you are looking to come down sooner, stay away from foods that are high in fat like avocados when initially engaging with THC.

4. Take Some CBD

Considering that CBD has powerful anti-anxiety benefits, this makes a lot of sense. While CBD and THC technically come from the same plant, they work very differently within the endocannabinoid system. In fact, when CBD is taken with THC, it works to inhibit the psychoactive effects of THC. If you find yourself too high, taking a dose of CBD can help you begin to feel a little more normal.

5. Chew On Black Peppercorns

We know, it sounds weird but hear us out on this one. There is pretty strong evidence showing that the terpene beta-caryophyllene found in black peppercorns can counteract the effects of THC, specifically paranoia. If you find yourself a little too high, taking a few sniffs of black peppercorns or even munching on a few may be able to help. Even Willie Nelson swears by this trick!

6. Call a Friend

Hopefully you have a friend with you to help calm you down, but if you don't, phoning a friend to help set you at ease is always a good idea! If nothing else, they will be able to reassure you that you will be ok.

7. Take a Shower

While taking a shower or a bath won’t necessarily sober you up, it can be a great way to help you relax a little and take your mind off of the way you’re feeling. Plus, you’ll feel nice and refreshed!

8. Get Creative

As long as you aren’t feeling too terrible, drawing, painting, or doing some sort of craft can help distract you from the way you’re feeling and harness the creativity the THC may spark in you. Keeping your mind off of the way you’re feeling is going to be very helpful in feeling better.

9. Take A Nap

When all else fails, try to sleep it off. Hopefully by the time you wake up you will have come down at least enough to feel better. If you find that you are too anxious or paranoid to sleep, try just turning the lights off and laying in bed with your eyes closed to help you relax.

Consuming too much THC is never an ideal situation, but if you happen to find yourself a little too high, there are definitely steps you can take to help reduce your anxiety and hopefully bring down your high enough to start to feel normal again.

The most important thing to remember is that it will end and you won’t feel that way forever. Practicing safe consumption by always using THC in a safe place, with people you trust and you will be set!
